The narrator's dry delivery probably helped the joke a good amount too.

It's not egregiously sexist but it was something I noticed.Īnd tbh, there was a joke that could be taken as sexist but cracked me up anyway. Mainly in the book her role is to be hot and eventually bang the main character. You're told the main female character is important to the revolution but you’re rarely shown this. But the whole book is about men doing all the important things. So woman get to pick their mates, and usually have many husbands in a variety of different union types. Because it's a prison colony, the male to female ratio is skewed heavily towards males. Heinlein does tell you that Lunie society is run by woman. The books isn't perfect, it's a little sexist despite trying to not be. You are my best friend, Man.' Got me every time. Cracked me up every time he would call Mannie, 'Man' for short. The rest of the books is Mannie, Mike and their accomplices running a successful revolution And then he sorts of just falls into a leadership role in the revolution by virtue of being at the right place, right time. Mannie befriends the 'Mike' the super computer. One of them becomes sentient and Mannie is the only one who knows. So they have a bunch of supercomputers running it all. Water, radio transmissions, flights to and from the Moon etc. Computers automate more or less everything on the Moon. The main character, Mannie, fixes computers. If you do something wrong, people beat you up and sucks to be you. So this libertarian style, from the ground up, enforcement of norms has emerged. But beyond that, they are mostly left to themselves in day to day life. There is a nominal government installed by Earth, but they only really make sure the 'Lunies' don't get too out of line and keep shipping grain back home. The society on the Moon is a libertarians wet dream. Life on the Moon is tough and what little they are able to produce mostly gets shipped backed to Earth for free. The inhabitants of the Moon are all descendants of exiled criminal from Earth. Basically the Moon is like outer-space Australia. The book is basically about a revolution on the Moon against the Earth. There aren't any big surprises in this book but mild spoilers below and larger spoilers will be in the spoiler thingies. And I think there were a ton of funny one liners that I would have totally missed had I read it instead of listened to it. This mostly has been positive but there have been a few recent reads that get a lot of love here that I didn't like. This is basically the theme of the last 12 months or so of reading for me: I expect an author or a book to be one thing, but I'm completely and totally wrong. I was hesitant to start this one because I thought it would be too dry and boring. I listened to this book a few weeks ago on audible and really enjoyed it.
